Tower Regeneration Ltd as part of the approved planning consent (10/0292/10) to carry out land remediation and reclamation, including surface coal extraction and land restoration of the former Tower Colliery includes a implementation of a programme of archaeological works in accordance with a written scheme of investigation (WSI).
The Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust Ltd (GGAT Projects) has been commissioned by Tower Regeneration Ltd to undertake the archaeological works and prepare the WSI thus providing the framework for the archaeological programme.
The WSI provides for a field walking exercise, as well as numerous surveys, field evaluations and excavations, all of which are designed to provide suitable archaeological mitigation for the proposed development. During the post-excavation stage, archives were prepared to specifications in Management of Archaeological Projects by a programme of analysis and research and production of a site narrative and final report. A number of features relating to 19th and 20th-century industrial activity were identified within the Project site.
The archaeological works will be carried out to the professional standards laid down by the Institute of Field Archaeologists.
